Roommate Expense Tracker
One shared tab for rent, utilities, wifi and groceries. No sign-up, nothing to install, and every roommate sees the same balance.
or start from a grocery receipt
Items and tax are read automatically. Then just tap who is in on what.
Name the household above and you get a shared tab: a running record of every bill anyone in the apartment pays, who it covers, and what each person owes right now. Share the link in the house chat and your roommates are in. There is no account to make, no app to install, and no spreadsheet to keep alive.
How the shared tab works for a household
Log each bill once
Whoever pays the rent, the electricity or the Costco run logs it with the amount and who it covers. That takes a few seconds and it is the only bookkeeping anyone does.
Everyone sees the same balance
Every roommate opens the tab in a browser or the app and sees who owes whom, with the bill behind every number. Nobody argues with a breakdown they can see.
Each bill keeps its own split
Rent in unequal shares weighted by room, utilities even, a grocery run only among the people who ate it. The tab combines them into one balance per person.
Settle once a month
Pick a day and settle the net balance. SplitPal works out the fewest transfers, usually one payment per person, and can pre-fill the amount in Venmo.
Rent, utilities, wifi and groceries, each split its own way
A household is not one bill. Rent is usually split by room, utilities and the internet by person, groceries by who is in on them. A single "everyone pays a third" rule gets one of those wrong, which is where the resentment starts. In SplitPal every expense carries its own split: equal, by shares, or by exact amounts. Log rent once with the weighted shares you agreed on, log the electricity bill as an even split, assign the bulk toilet paper to the whole house and the oat milk to the two people who drink it. For the rules themselves, the guide to splitting bills with roommates covers rent by room size, electricity, wifi, groceries and what to do when incomes differ.
No chasing, no monthly spreadsheet
The balance carries from month to month, so the roommate who always pays the internet bill is never quietly out of pocket. When the bill comes in, they log it; their share is covered by what they already owe on groceries, and whatever is left shows up at settle-up. One monthly settle of the net amounts replaces a dozen small transfers in every direction.
Your roommates do not need the app
One person starts the tab and shares the link. Everyone else opens it in any browser, with no install and no account, and can add their own bills, see their balance and settle with a tap. The iOS and Android apps add the camera: photograph a grocery receipt and the line items, tax and discounts are read automatically, so the one shared Costco run gets split by item instead of by guess.
When someone moves out
Prorate their last month's rent and fixed bills by days, settle their balance to zero before the deposit conversation, and carry on with the rest of the house. A new roommate starts from zero on the same tab. The roommate guide has the prorating formula.
Roommate expense tracker FAQ
What app splits bills for roommates?
SplitPal. One roommate creates a free shared tab in the browser, names the household, and shares the link in the house chat. Everyone opens it without an account or download, logs the bills they pay, and sees the same balance. It is also on the App Store and Google Play.
Is there a free roommate expense tracker with no sign-up?
Yes. The tab on this page is free and needs no account: create it, share the link, and start logging. The mobile apps are free as well. The only paid part is unlimited receipt scanning, after the free scans every user gets.
Can we split rent unequally and utilities equally in the same tab?
Yes. Every expense has its own split. Log rent as unequal shares weighted by room, log electricity and wifi as an even split, and assign a grocery run only to the people who are in on it. The balance combines all of them.
What if one roommate pays the whole electricity bill?
Log the bill with that roommate as the payer and everyone as participants. The tab records that the others owe them their share, and it nets against whatever they owe elsewhere, so nobody has to send money for every bill.
Do roommates have to pay each other after every bill?
No. Let the balance run and settle once a month. SplitPal nets everything down to the fewest possible transfers, usually one payment per person, and can pre-fill the amount in Venmo.
What happens to the tab when a roommate moves out?
Prorate their last month's rent and fixed bills by days, settle their balance to zero, then carry on with the remaining roommates. A new roommate starts from zero on the same tab; nobody inherits an old balance.
